Mathematical Explorations with MATLAB by K. Chen, Peter J. Giblin

Posted by Muhlis Monday, December 6, 2010 0 comments

Review

"Anyone who has ever pondered using a sophisticated computer algebra system in a course involving nontrivial mathematics should peruse this book...Those with an applied mathematics orientation should find this work particularly interesting." Choice

Description

Mathematical Explorations with MATLAB examines the mathematics most frequently encountered in first-year university courses. A key feature of the book is its use of MATLAB, a popular and powerful software package. The book's emphasis is on understanding and investigating the mathematics by putting the mathematical tools into practice in a wide variety of modeling situations. Even readers who have no prior experience with MATLAB will gain fluency. The book covers a wide range of material: matrices, whole numbers, complex numbers, geometry of curves and families of lines, data analysis, random numbers and simulations, and differential equations from the basic mathematics. These lessons are applied to a rich variety of investigations and modeling problems, from sequences of real numbers to cafeteria queues, from card shuffling to models of fish growth. All extras to the standard MATLAB package are supplied on the World Wide Web.

Numerical Methods in Finance: A MATLAB-Based Introduction

    Posted by Muhlis 0 comments

Balanced coverage of the methodology and theory of numerical methods in finance

Numerical Methods in Finance bridges the gap between financial theory and computational practice while helping students and practitioners exploit MATLAB for financial applications.

Paolo Brandimarte covers the basics of finance and numerical analysis and provides background material that suits the needs of students from both financial engineering and economics perspectives. Classical numerical analysis methods; optimization, including less familiar topics such as stochastic and integer programming; simulation, including low discrepancy sequences; and partial differential equations are covered in detail. Extensive illustrative examples of the application of all of these methodologies are also provided.

The text is primarily focused on MATLAB-based application, but also includes descriptions of other readily available toolboxes that are relevant to finance. Helpful appendices on the basics of MATLAB and probability theory round out this balanced coverage. Accessible for students–yet still a useful reference for practitioners–Numerical Methods in Finance offers an expert introduction to powerful tools in finance.

A to Z of Mathematicians (Notable Scientists)

      Posted by Muhlis 0 comments
      From School Library Journal
Grade 9 Up–This volume profiles 150 mathematicians from around the globe, only six of whom are women. McElroy's focus is on historical figures who lived before 1900, whose work has stood the test of time. Each entry has basic biographical information when known and a description of the subject's accomplishments. The language flows easily, almost conversationally. The author states in his introduction that he has written the book with general readers in mind. Each entry concludes with a list of further resources. However, some of the bibliographic references would be difficult to find for students who do not have access to academic libraries and databases. Average-quality, black-and-white illustrations appear throughout. Helpful resources include lists of people by field, country of birth, country of major scientific activity, and year of birth, and a chronology. A final bibliography lists all of the books and journal articles mentioned in each entry and Internet sources. Students whose course of study focuses on mathematics would be most likely to benefit from this work. The Dictionary of Scientific Biography (Gale, 1998) and the Encyclopedia Britannica offer similar information. Robyn Young's Notable Mathematicians (Gale, 1998) would also be of interest to this audience.–Maureen Connelly, John C. Hart Memorial Library, Shrub Oak, NY

      From Booklist
Another title in the Facts on File Notable Scientists series, designed to give concise information to students in grades nine and up. It includes information on about 140 individuals--their work, families, major achievements, and contributions to their scientific field. Entries are alphabetically arranged, run about 750 to 1,200 words, and are often accompanied by a small black-and-white photo.
The volume tries to be representative of men and women from many countries and throughout history although, with the exception of Kurt Godel, mathematicians born in the twentieth century are excluded. Among those who are covered are Archimedes, Jakob Bernoulli, Ada Lovelace, and Srinivasa Aiyangar Ramanujan.
In-text cross-references to other articles within the volume are done in bold type. There are lists of entries sorted by field, country of birth, country of major activity, and time period, in addition to a general index. The bibliography lists mostly journal articles and books, with a short, selective list of math Web sites. "Further Reading" follows each entry (usually two to four older journal articles).
This title is more inviting and easier to use than Isaac Asimov's trusty Biographical Encyclopedia of Science and Technology (rev. ed., Doubleday, 1982). It will be a useful though not essential purchase, where the other series titles are used. Susan Gooden

          Ebook Review  :
I've been trying to learn about Facebook both from a user's perspective and that of a developer. Why? Because any service with 200 million users is something I will run into in my work - and it looks like fun.

I've read several books on Facebook application development and this is the best I've seen so far. (I still have several to go, so my opinion may change.)

Author Richard Wagner takes a matter of fact approach and begins with the essentials, something other books oddly fail to do. One immediate standout feature is Wagner's diagramming and explaining Facebook's application architecture. Several other books omit this entirely or give it short shrift. Wagner diagrams it plainly and clearly and it helps.

Wagner deliberately restricts the scope of his book, again in contrast to other authors who try to include something on every language usable with Facebook. I prefer Wagner's "small steps" first approach. It is much easier to deal with and offers more depth, I think.

He starts off with building a very simple Facebook application and then moves into specific discussions of the Facebook API, FBTML, FQL and FJS. Don't recognize these terms? Don't worry: Wagner explains them thoroughly in easily understandable language with plenty of examples and illustrations.

There's as lot more and all of it is good.

But there is a drawback: Facebook is in a constant state of development and things change, sometimes massively. That happened recently and has many people upset for a variety of reasons.

In any event, some of the thins in this book are obsolete. That doesn't detract from its overall usefulness, though.

This is an excellent book for anyone who wants to understand the Facebook application development process.

This new edition has been updated by David to incorporate changes to PHP since the first edition and to offer the latest techniques–a classic guide modernized for 21st century PHP techniques, innovations, and best practices.
You want to make your websites more dynamic by adding a feedback form, creating a private area where members can upload images that are automatically resized, or perhaps storing all your content in a database. The problem is, you’re not a programmer and the thought of writing code sends a chill up your spine. Or maybe you’ve dabbled a bit in PHP and MySQL, but you can’t get past baby steps. If this describes you, then you’ve just found the right book. PHP and the MySQL database are deservedly the most popular combination for creating dynamic websites. They’re free, easy to use, and provided by many web hosting companies in their standard packages.
Unfortunately, most PHP books either expect you to be an expert already or force you to go through endless exercises of little practical value. In contrast, this book gives you real value right away through a series of practical examples that you can incorporate directly into your sites, optimizing performance and adding functionality such as file uploading, email feedback forms, image galleries, content management systems, and much more. Each solution is created with not only functionality in mind, but also visual design.
But this book doesn’t just provide a collection of ready-made scripts: each PHP Solution builds on what’s gone before, teaching you the basics of PHP and database design quickly and painlessly. By the end of the book, you’ll have the confidence to start writing your own scripts or–if you prefer to leave that task to others–to adapt existing scripts to your own requirements. Right from the start, you’re shown how easy it is to protect your sites by adopting secure coding practices.

          About the Author
David Powers is the author of a series of highly successful books on PHP, Dreamweaver, and web development. He began developing websites in 1994 when – as Editor, BBC Japanese TV – he needed a way to promote his fledgling TV channel, but didn’t have an advertising budget. He persuaded the IT department to let him have some space on the BBC’s server, and hand-coded a bilingual website from scratch. That experience ignited a passion for web development that consumes him to this day.
David is an Adobe Community Professional and Adobe Certified Instructor for Dreamweaver. In 2010, he became one of the first people to qualify as a PHP 5.3 Zend Certified Engineer.
